EDC turns dirt on Constitution Drive extension

Polo Enriquez EDC Executive DirectorCopperas Cove and Coryell county officials gathered Tuesday morning to break ground on the Constitution Drive extension — a long-awaited project that is the first step in developing the eastern side of the city.

Massive trucks and earthmovers began work as attendees assembled behind 10 golden shovels on an American flag-lined roadway. The estimated six-month, $1.16 million project will extent the road from its current endpoint at Mashburn Drive to connect with Mueller Street.

"This is not an overnight deal," said Polo Enriquez, executive director of the Copperas Cove Economic Development Corp. at the 10 a.m. event Tuesday. "It took five years of visionary work from the EDC board."

Michael Lyttle, director of public affairs for the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, said the extension represents a $12 million investment from the state and would result in 56 jobs and about $5.4 million in wages and salaries.

The extension is one of many developments on the EDC-owned 125 acres received through the land swap with Fort Hood in June. Other projects include the $13 million housing complex Constitution Court and the Shops at Five Hills shopping center.
